Oh, is it that time of year already? Time to put away the old, outdated and worn and dress your body and mind in something brand spanking new. Can’t afford to buy much? Join the club. Here are my resolutions for a stylish new year. Please help yourself to any idea any that you think would be a little sparkler in your life. It’s free!
1. Splitting the Jean: I am going to rampage through my jeans collection, ruthlessly discarding any that have not been worn in the last 6 months. Like many women, my jeans are the backbone of my wardrobe, useful to wear anytime from a casual work situation to date night. I am still loving my skinny jeans with stretch and my ancient cuffed Levis that have that looser Katie Holmes-ish vibe.
2. Sweater Girl: A cold weather staple. I am going to grab a few (if there are any left) on sale at my fave, and often blogged about, sweater spot -- J. Crew. I like to layer colorful cashmere with a white tank or silk blouse underneath for a little interest and additional warmth.
3. Work It: It will not surprise anyone to hear that my gym gets very crowded in January. The real fun however, comes by Valentine’s Day when the resolution-istas are gone and the die hards remain. I love that feeling of being the last woman standing. Also the hard truth is if I want to keep those skinny jeans, I have no choice. I was not blessed with a cheetah-like metabolism, so if I want to wear the clothes I like, I have to work for it. Remember when your mom used to say, anything worth having is worth working for? She was right.
4. Make do and Mend: Because we are all spending more carefully, I am going to think hard about what I already own. I am more thankful than ever that most of my purchases in the last few years were pretty classics with staying power that still look fresh. I am going to repair, reorganize and polish all the goodies I am lucky enough to own and not fret about what I can not afford to buy.
5. Pretty is as Pretty Does: I resolve to make my surroundings as lovely as I deserve. You heard me right. As I deserve. I will buy flowers (even if they come from Safeway and not the chic florist downtown), I will dust off my favorite books and movies, I will light candles, I will put on perfume. All the pleasure I will receive will radiate to those around me. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Happy New Year Darlings!
